What Is Truth?
"Pilate said to Him, 'What is truth?'" (John 18:38)
Nearly 2,000 years ago, Pontius Pilate asked one of history's greatest questions.
The Bible answers that question with seven foundational truths every person needs to know.
Truth #1 — Every Person Is Born a Sinner
Meaning:
Adam, the original sinner, is the father of the entire human race. Because we are born in Adam's image, we are born with a sinful nature.
Scripture — Romans 5:12 (NASB)
"Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all mankind, because all sinned—"
Truth #2 — The Wages of Sin Is Death
Meaning:
Because Adam sinned, every person enters the world separated from God. We are born spiritually dead and destined for eternal judgment apart from God's intervention.
Scripture — Romans 6:23a (NASB)
"For the wages of sin is death..."
Truth #3 — The Gift of God Is Eternal Life
Meaning:
Although we deserve death because of our sin, God offers eternal life as a free gift through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Scripture — Romans 6:23b (NASB)
"...but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Truth #4 — Salvation Is by Grace Through Faith
Meaning:
Eternal life cannot be earned by good works, religion, or personal effort. It is God's gift, received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
Scripture — Ephesians 2:8–9 (NASB)
"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
Truth #5 — Jesus Christ Is Our Only Hope
Meaning:
Since we cannot save ourselves, God sent His Son to do for us what we could never do for ourselves. Jesus Christ alone is our Savior.
Scripture — Titus 3:5 (NASB)
"He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we did in righteousness, but according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit."
Truth #6 — Jesus Christ Is the Way, the Truth, and the Life
Meaning:
Jesus Himself declared that He is the only way to the Father. Salvation is found in no one else.
Scripture — John 14:6 (NASB)
"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.'"
Truth #7 — Every Person Must Make a Decision
Meaning:
God offers eternal life as a free gift through His Son. Each of us must decide whether we will receive or reject Jesus Christ.
Scripture — John 3:36 (NASB)
"The one who believes in the Son has eternal life; but the one who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him."
What About You?
God has provided everything necessary for your salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Pilate asked,
"What is truth?"
Now God asks you a far more personal question:
What will you do with Jesus Christ?
